The challenge of creating plots worthy of a movie is again faced by “Downton Abbey: A New Era.” This film feels as warm and cozy as a brandy by a fire. Julian Fellowes, the series creator, is elegant, charming, and sometimes quite emotional. He still knows how to pick the right strings upstairs and down to create a musical score with his cast.
This “Era” is three years after the original movie and six years since the PBS signed off the show. Even Maggie Smith (87-years-old Maggie Smith, who deserves an Oscar push along with her three Emmys) has lost a step but not her rapier wit.
After a slow start, the two flourishes split the cast spatially while creating opportunities for some new faces to join the mix. A mysterious French seaside villa was left to the Dowager by an older man she knew decades before. The grudging decision was made to allow a film company to shoot a movie at this grand estate in 1928 when the world was transitioning from silent to talkies.
It’s a lot. At first glance, the second plot feels too much like an homage to “Singin’ in the Rain.” The silent stars (Dominic West and Laura Haddock) fret about their futures while the servants, with some notable exceptions who love being there, are just plain mad.
