With a name like Moloch, the name of the god of sacrifice for children and sacrifice, this Dutch horror film is likely an unrelenting shocker that would frighten and entertain. But, Shudder’s Moloch gives new meaning to the notion of a slow burn, moving along but never really making its horror elements work in the manner required. The film invests much of its time with its characters and in the drama in their lives. This might have made for a positive idea; however, it never does anything to create any kind of and makes Moloch an extremely disappointing horror movie.
Produced by Nico van den Brink from an original script written by him and Daan Bakker. Moloch follows Betriek (Sallie Harmsen), an unmarried young mom who lives alongside her parents near the edge of the peat bog. The time that Betriek was a young girl and witnessed something terrible at her family’s home that she cannot describe. When her family is assaulted in their home at night, she discovers that her family might be cursed and embarks on a quest to figure out why this is happening to them. In the meantime, a group of scientists led by Jonas (Alexandre Willaume) investigates the bog and might be able to help in revealing the truth behind the curse that has been enshrined in Betriek’s family. Moloch is a possibility, but its plotline is seriously hurting it. The film spends a good amount of time exploring Betriek’s problems with her family and developing a relationship with Jonas. The horror elements begin to seem as if they were an extra-curricular element. For most of the duration, Moloch feels like a story about a single mom adjusting to life following the death of her husband; if it had been able to embrace that theme fully, the film could have been a successful effort. In reality, Moloch presents two movies simultaneously, but they don’t connect. The horror elements are not well-developed, and when the ghoulish finale comes around, it’s not well-earned. Some of the effects on creatures are impressive; however, the terrifying ending is unsettling in a film that doesn’t feel like an actual horror film. Visit myflixer to watch more.
