He is soon involved in a fight with a group known as Human Traffickers, just a few hours after he arrives. The events escalate when his friend’s sister gets kidnapped. Donnie Yen and Wilson Yip’s Ip Man films have been a success. Since then, there have been a flood of copycat films that put the real hero in a wide variety of fantasal situations, far more than the real Ip Man would face.
This is not a judgment, but Donnie Yen’s version of the character required serious dramatic license. His movies surpassed this hurdle with great performances, an impressive production design, and some of the most amazing fight choreography you can buy. Unfortunately, most of these Ip Man features cannot match Yip’s and Yens’s great series.
Although it could not match Yip’s bravura action scenes, it did have some excellent martial arts sequences and featured a great performance by Anthony Wong, a Hong Kong cinema legend. Pre-judged productions are the problem.
Most viewers won’t give a Donnie Yen film the time of the day. Many of their preconceived notions may be correct, but you only have to look at Ip Man and Wong Kar Wai’s amazing The Grandmaster (2013) for proof that it is possible to make an Ip Man biopic.
