It uses stop-motion animation in a way that is unlike any other film. Although it won’t be for everyone, its technical achievements and the frighteningly vivid vision make it well worth the effort. You will be captivated by its unique blend of techniques, tones, and styles and the ethereal world it creates. It is both exuberant as well as dour. The stop-motion creations are beautifully realized but also brutal. They are intertwined seamlessly with exquisite miniature sets and creations that defy categorization. It is a magnificent trip into the macabre if you allow it to wash over you.
The film’s story is more a visual tale than a literal one. We see a mysterious character who travels deep into the terrors below to accomplish a mission that is still largely unknown to them. It is told with almost no dialogue, or at least not in a language we understand. All visuals are communicated with solid confidence, exposing us to existence’s cruelty. Tippett’s world is dark and bleak. It feels like all creation has been destroyed by war or that everything has been entirely reduced to rubble. The film shows that suffering and depravity have reduced what is left alive. This film is filled with disgusting elements and revels in them all.
