Like other superhero films, Lightyear tells the narrative of Buzz Lightyear’s conception and early years before he and Woody were best friends in the first Toy Story. In the voice segment, a new Lightyear appears. Chris Evans, the iconic and epochal Tim Allen’s replacement, is the movie’s very own Captain America. He has a strong, luminous American voice that is smooth, womanizing, sensual, and endearing. But I thought he lacked Allen’s knowledge and world-weariness to boldly venture to infinity and beyond.
The first is that there are good aspects to this movie. The Pixar animation is, in my opinion, the best I’ve ever seen and light years beyond where they began in 1995. The most striking designs are those of the space station, which is covered in turmeric, and the moon, which is filled with Nietzschean abysses of grey.
Like the best science fiction movies, this one genuinely gives you the idea that you are in space.
The best live-action action adventures and outer space blockbusters have some of their best action scenes. This works especially well in a shootout on the moon as Buzz plays ballet n’ dodgeball with the moon holes while evading laser rays and space gunfire.
